Why do we use mpls in networks?

If you run a business with multi locations distributed around town or around the country, MPLS can help you make more money as an enterprise. With MPLS, you can connect all of your locations together, eliminate carrier hardware in your telecom closet and prioritize all of your data traffic so that voice and video run flawlessly even when the network is at its peak. Multi protocol service providers can create IP tunnels throughout their network without the need for encryption or end user applications. In addition, MPLS is protected by carrier"s security systems. With VPNs, if one gets hacked your entire network is vulnerable. Is mpls secure?

The multi protocol label switching (mpls) protocol provides an alternative method of managing packets, frames and cells on a variety of different network types. The protocol operates at both layer 2 and layer 3, the data link and session levels of the ISO/OSI model and can be used on both packets switching methods. Mpls labels are applied to packets at the edge router of a network called the label edge router (LER). A label is a collection of routing information added to the header that includes the destination address, the allowed bandwidth and delay tolerated, the source IP address, the socket number used and other service information. The information contained by mpls lables make mpls traffic much more tolerant than SONET/SOH is.
